Hi I’m Sophie

I’m a Registered Midwife and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) with more than 16 years of midwifery experience, including 14 years in Melbourne.

My daughter, Annabelle, is the inspiration behind Latch & Learn. Becoming a mum and experiencing my own breastfeeding journey inspired me to take this next step.

I offer calm, practical and evidence-based support during pregnancy and throughout your breastfeeding journey.

My aim is to help you feel heard, supported and confident about what to do next.

A little more about me

I’m a Registered Midwife and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), and a member of Lactation Consultants of Australia and New Zealand (LCANZ).

I’ve worked with women and families throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period, as well as supporting students, graduate midwives and postgraduate learners.

I offer antenatal breastfeeding preparation as well as support after your baby arrives, with practical guidance about what to expect in the early days and how to get breastfeeding off to a good start.

At Latch & Learn, my approach is calm, compassionate, practical and evidence-based. My aim is for you to feel comfortable asking questions, feel heard and supported, and leave with greater confidence about your next steps.

Not sure if you need support?

Sometimes reassurance and a little guidance are all you need.

A little support goes a long way.

What to expect

Personalised, practical and compassionate support.

I’ll listen

We’ll take time to talk through your pregnancy, birth and feeding journey, along with any questions or concerns you may have.

We’ll look together

Where helpful, I’ll spend some time watching your baby feed, gently looking at what’s working well and where a little extra support may help.

We’ll explore

Together, we’ll make sense of what may be contributing to your feeding challenges, with plenty of time for questions along the way.

We’ll find a way forward

We’ll create a practical, personalised plan that feels manageable and supports your feeding goals and your family.

If I identify something that would benefit from further assessment or care, I’ll discuss this with you and recommend an appropriate healthcare professional where needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before your appointment.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed — you’re welcome to book an appointment whenever you feel you need support.

Can I see a lactation consultant while I'm pregnant?

Yes. Antenatal consultations can be a great opportunity to prepare for breastfeeding, particularly if you've experienced previous feeding difficulties or have specific concerns.

How soon after my baby is born can I see you?

Lactation support can be helpful from the very beginning. If you're experiencing pain, attachment difficulties, concerns about feeding or you're simply unsure whether things are going well, you don't need to wait for the problem to become more established.

Can I bring my support person to my visit?

Absolutely. Partners and support people are welcome.

What should I bring to my appointment?

If you’re expressing, feel free to bring your breast pump and any equipment you’re currently using. If your baby uses bottles, nipple shields or other feeding equipment, bring these along too. Most importantly, just bring yourself and your baby — we can work through the rest together.
